Het Industriegebouw on Goudsesingel in Rotterdam was designed by Hugh Maaskant and Willem van Tijen and completed in 1951. The building was conceived as a flexible commercial complex for businesses involved in trade, manufacturing and services.
The project anticipated many characteristics of the post-war business environment. Instead of designing separate buildings for different companies, Maaskant and Van Tijen combined offices, workshops, warehouses, showrooms, retail and logistics within one integrated complex.
Its architecture is characterised by a strong structural rhythm and a clear distinction between the different functions. The building’s robust concrete structure gives it a monumental presence while allowing the interior to remain flexible.
The project was an important predecessor to the much larger Groothandelsgebouw. Both buildings demonstrate Maaskant’s interest in large-scale commercial architecture and his belief that architecture could actively support economic growth.
After a period of decline, the building has been carefully revitalised. Its large internal spaces and robust construction have made it particularly suitable for contemporary offices, creative businesses, hospitality and retail.
Today, Het Industriegebouw is once again one of Rotterdam’s most recognisable post-war commercial buildings, demonstrating the long-term adaptability of Maaskant’s architecture.
