Crystal Houses

Crystal Houses by MVRDV is a flagship store in Amsterdam that explores how contemporary architecture can engage with historic urban contexts through material innovation. The project reinterprets a traditional Dutch canal house façade using an entirely transparent construction of solid glass bricks, frames, and detailing.

Rather than replacing the original architecture, the design replicates its proportions, rhythm, and ornamentation in glass, creating a façade that is both familiar and radically new. This transparent surface gradually transitions into a conventional terracotta brick façade at the upper levels, where residential units are located, maintaining compliance with local planning rules.

The building combines 620 m² of retail space with 220 m² of housing, addressing the demand for larger flagship stores while preserving the character of Amsterdam’s historic shopping streets.

A key ambition of the project is to counter the homogenisation of global retail environments. By merging heritage references with cutting-edge glass technology—developed in collaboration with engineers and researchers—the design achieves both transparency and contextual continuity.

Ultimately, Crystal Houses demonstrates how innovation in materials can create a dialogue between past and present, offering a model for integrating large-scale commercial functions into sensitive historic settings without sacrificing local identity.
