Portlantis

For centuries, Rotterdam and its port have developed together in a symbiotic relationship. In the 21st century, the Port of Rotterdam is undergoing one of its largest transformations, shifting towards sustainable and low-energy operations. Portlantis, designed by MVRDV, translates this complex transition into a public experience. Located at the westernmost point of the port on the artificial land extension of Maasvlakte 2, the visitor and exhibition centre acts as a beacon overlooking the North Sea, coastline, and harbour.

The building consists of five rotated exhibition spaces stacked vertically, creating a distinctive silhouette within the vast industrial landscape. Its crimson-red public route connects the dunes to the rooftop, guiding visitors along a journey that reveals the scale and complexity of the port. By functioning as both exhibition centre and viewing tower, Portlantis creates a physical connection between the city, the port, and the public.

The design follows a practical and industrial character, reflecting the identity of the harbour itself. The building’s form directly responds to its programme and surroundings: each square floor is rotated to frame a specific view through a large panorama window. These orientations correspond to the function of each level, from the café overlooking the dunes to the restaurant offering views of the North Sea and the illuminated port skyline.

The permanent exhibition, designed by Kossmanndejong, occupies the intermediate floors and uses the surrounding harbour as an extension of the exhibition itself. Each level focuses on a different theme, with carefully positioned views reinforcing the stories being told. At the centre of the building, a 22-metre-high atrium forms a dramatic communal space. A kinetic sculpture, a port model, and a mirrored ceiling enhance the sense of scale and create a memorable arrival experience.

Externally, the rotated floors create platforms connected by bright red staircases that spiral upwards along the building. This freely accessible route transforms Portlantis into a public observation tower, allowing visitors to experience the port landscape from different perspectives.

Portlantis can be understood as a contemporary example of supermodernist architecture, combining an iconic autonomous form with technological expression and an emphasis on experience. The building acts as a landmark within a global industrial landscape while creating a human-scale narrative about the future of the port.

Sustainability is integrated into both the material strategy and operation of the building. Its demountable structure enables future reuse, while façade components are designed for return and recycling. Avoiding concrete piles reduces the impact on the site. Through efficient insulation, a heat pump, and on-site renewable energy generation, Portlantis produces more energy than it consumes, demonstrating the sustainable ambitions it communicates to its visitors.
