Glass Farm

Glass Farm by MVRDV is a contemporary landmark that reconnects Schijndel’s market square with its local identity and agricultural heritage. Following the damage caused by WWII bombings, the project fills a historic gap in the town centre with a building inspired by the traditional Schijndel farmhouse.

The building’s maximum volume was defined by the shape of a typical regional farm. In collaboration with artist Frank van der Salm, MVRDV analysed and photographed remaining historic farms to create an idealised image of the local farmhouse. This image was digitally printed onto the building’s entire glass façade, transforming the structure into a contemporary interpretation of regional architecture.

At 1.6 times the scale of a traditional farmhouse, the Glass Farm becomes a monumental version of a familiar typology. The enlarged details create a sense of nostalgia while emphasizing the building’s role as a new civic landmark. During the day, the printed glass façade creates a translucent appearance, while at night the illuminated building becomes a glowing reference to the village’s past.

With approximately 1,600 m² of retail, hospitality, cultural, and wellness functions, the project combines public activity with a strong architectural statement. Glass Farm demonstrates MVRDV’s approach of transforming local history into a contemporary, experiential architecture.
